HIKING

The north of Spain has many outstanding hiking routes and one of the most famous and recognized routes in the world, the old ‘pilgrim’s way’ to Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia. Its Cathedral is the destination for all the Camino route versions; you can walk, cycle or even ride these walking paths. Most pilgrims walk and plan everything themselves but if you need some extra help, let us to know it!

You don´t have to be a pilgrim to grab your bike or boots and join in a 1000-year-old tradition, travelling all or part of the 780 km (French Route). But as you walk its footpaths, country lanes and forest tracks, you are following in the footsteps of generations of pilgrims. Nowadays, the pilgrims all over the world walk toward their goal: the stunning Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, western Spain, the Christendom´s third-holiest site (after Jerusalem and Rome). Hike down from Roncesvalles in the Pyrenees to thread, via Pamplona and the vineyards of Rioja, up to the Meseta, Spain´s vast inland plateau. This trip allows you to enjoy many amazing landscapes through 8 Spanish regions filled with intense cultural and natural heritage. Overnight at the refugios and hospitales, simple and centuries-old accommodations, helps you to feel yourself the charm of this historical tradition.

We can assist you to organise the daily stages and even be your guide along the way. AdreaminSpain members have done the different routes many times and could act as a link between you and the Spanish culture and people. Join the adventure!

(If you don´t see yourself carrying a heavy backpack with all your stuff, we can arrange a solution, an assistance car. You will do the walking stages free of weight and you will have your luggage when we reach the destination).
The inland Spain offers a variety of landscapes, both in Castilla y León (with collosal peaks of their mountain ranges or their river canyons), and Madrid (whose routes will take you to monuments like the Monastery of El Escorial), Extremadura (which passes through the famous route called "de la Plata", with its well-known artistic heritage) and Castilla-La Mancha (whose plains allow the visitor to see entertained by the horizon and routes that cross the lands of the famous Don Quijote). As capital city, Madrid, has a large mount of hiking places but if we have to highlight some these would be the mountainous area (divided into two main areas) which offers impressive tracks that vary in difficulty and length according to hikers.

  • Navacerrada area is very popular on weekends, rather traditional ski and hiking place. This area is a must for hiking lovers. There are many possibilities in this area, from small routes for the whole family to routes for experienced climbers looking for a real killer route: El Camino Schmid, Penalara (the highest peak in Madrid), La Cuerda Larga ... are some examples.
  • La Pedriza, a massif granite area located 50 km from Madrid centre, along the Santillana reservoir. The unique characteristics of this natural area made it declared a Protected Natural Park in 1990 that is listed in the Worldwide Biosphere Reserves by Unesco. It is one of the most stunning landscapes in the Region of Madrid and a hiker and mountain climber’s paradise. Don´t forget, if the weather is good, to enjoy a refreshing swim in any of the hundreds of pools that the river Manzanares has been built up on the rock over the years.

This combination of sport and nature will ensure a memorable visit experience to Navacerrada or La Pedriza.

Another interesting option is the routes in El Escorial. The ascent of Mount Abantos from whose peak you can enjoy an unforgettable panoramic view stretching to Madrid centre (for adults) and the familiar route to the Chair of King Philip II, an easy and nice family track that is combined with the Forest Ecological Trail de la Herrerñia, a delight!
If you want strong emotions we could move to the province of Ávila, specifically to the Gredos Regional Natural Park, where trails await hikers incredible daring. The whole park is a formation of glacial origin of great geomorphological interest. The succession of lakes, cirques, gorges, cliffs, moraine deposits invites us to enjoy nature at its best. The most interesting is the path that leads to the highest peak in the area, the Almanzor (2592m), passing through the beautiful Circo de Gredos lagoon. This route can be done in one day but we recommend spending at least two and enjoy this wonderful enclave and the surrounding villages. To spend the night, there is the option of sleeping in a fully equipped mountain shelter, but if the weather is fair and you have a true adventurer´ soul we highly recommend spent the night 'sleeping rough' at the edge of the Laguna Grande and enjoy, away from sources of light pollution, the sparkling sky and glimpse a shooting star.

In addition Spain awaits you with 14 National Parks, Natural Parks and Biosphere Reserves. From adreaminSpain we recommend visit two of them in two routes that combine the enjoyment of nature and cultural values:

  • Las Tablas de Daimiel” National Park and the Natural Park “Las Lagunas de Ruidera”. The first represents the ecosystems linked to continental wetlands and the second is an oasis of water and vegetation, making up 16 stepped lakes with streams and waterfalls.
  • Monfragüe National Park, its Biosphere Reserve and its Socioeconomic Influence Area. The Tagus and its tributary, the Tiértar, provide the aquatic environment and sculpt large quartzite cliffs where spectacular colonies of vultures and peregrine falcons, the eagle, and owl are settled. On the river banks we can find the kingfisher, cormorants and nightingales, and other animals related to the aquatic environment such as otters.

There are hundreds of interesting routes in and around Madrid so be prepared and come to discover them!

* If you come in Autumn you have the opportunity to combine those hiking routes with one of the most popular gastronomic activities in Madrid surroundings, the mushrooms-picking! If we are lucky, that day we can eat a delicious rice dish with the mushrooms collected!
