SHOPPING

From beautiful antiques to the latest in design: furniture, fashion from national designers to the most prestigious brands, gifts, souvenirs or special food stuff the shop windows all-round the city are very attractive to the stroller. Shops, malls and street markets in Madrid are a world of infinite possibilities when shopping.

Madrid is presented as a great temptation for people of all ages to shop, with its many shops and malls, many of them open continuously throughout the day, both in the centre and the periphery. Across the capital can highlight five shopping areas: Salamanca, Chueca, Centro, Princess and Cuatro Caminos districts.

Remember! The sales (Rebajas) usually are from the second week of January until the end of February for the winter season, and from late June to late August for the summer one, so let´s go bargain hunting!

Our special recommendation is one of the most famous street market places in the world and the largest in Europe, El Rastro. Every Sunday morning, just in the historical centre of Madrid, over 1,000 stallholders and street sellers tempt visitors with a multitude of wares: trinkets, second-hand and reduced-price clothing, antiques, arts and crafts, books and discs…trying to bargain is acceptable at all stalls although some stallholders will maintain their previous price and in reality have fixed prices. The market has a unique atmosphere and is a magnet for both tourists and locals who make the most of their visit by combining a little shopping followed by the customary drink and tapas in some of the bars and traditional taverns in the area.
Residents Tip: Keep an eye on your wallet or purse and if taking a backpack wear it on your front. Pickpockets, although not numerous, have benn known to operate in the busy market environment.
In case of bad weather you can always visit one of the big malls that abound in Madrid area. El Gran Plaza 2 (Majadahonda) filled of well-known Spanish stores to international brand name establishments or Xanadú (Arroyomolinos) that also boasts a superb indoor ski slope, are the exact places you want to be if you are looking for an interesting shopping day. All of them offer restaurants, cafés and bars which provide a variety of opportunities to enjoy a delicious meal or snack, many with international flavour. Besides, you can also kick back and relax at one of their 3-D cinemas or improve your aim at their bowling alleys. Specifically, Xanadú was referred in the New York Times as a "Snowy Pleasure Dome" when it opened in 2003. The 18000 m2 of snow allow you, both expert and beginner ski and snowboarding enthusiasts to practice your favourite sport throughout the year. An indoor racetrack for karting, beckons to those with a need for speed, and a mini-golf course and a mini amusement park also deserve consideration.

AMUSEMENT PARKS & ZOO

In Spain it is very easy to have fun in some of its theme parks filled with attractions. In particular, Madrid, boasts two of the greatest parks in the country. In the South opens its doors Warner Park, which brings to our country all the magic and spectacle of Hollywood. The enclosure can be accessed through the Hollywood Boulevard or the Movie World Studios. Apart of amazing and imposing attractions, some of them just for really brave people, the yourger guests can meet their favourite cartoon on Cartoon Village: Daffy Duck, Tweety, Bugs Bunny...while Old West Territory put us into the American Wild West, with a huge wooden coaster. The second one is Madrid Amusement Park where more than 40 exciting attractions await you just a few minutes from Madrid downtown. Hanging coasters reaching 80 km/h, giant pendulums with 180º movement or free falls from 63 m height, tuen the visit into an unforgettable experience. The young audience has its own area with conventional and aquatic roller coasters, bumper cars or pirate ship, all in "mini" size. If you like animals and you want to spend the day among them, choose the Zoo Aquarium or the Faunia Park, where you can feel like a tropical jungle explorer.

In summer, the best option are the water parks which guaranteed to provide a fun filled day for adults and children alike. Do you want to enjoy this irresistible family plan? For example, next to Madrid Aquópolis awaits you one of the largest water parks in Europe, where water, sun and fun for the whole family let you to get the most out of the day. Take this opportunity to share with their children a pleasant day, full of laughter, emotions and games. In addition, the comprehensive range of complementary services that it has (green and recreation areas, sanitary equipment, lifeguards, shops, restaurants ...), will allow you to spend a safe, pleasant and comfortable time.

From: 30€/adults and 20€/children (picnic and transportation included).

COOL DOWN

If the heat is stifling and you are looking for something more than the water parks, the pool and the beach, you can always cool off in a full contact with nature. The natural pools of El Paular or Navafría (in the middle of the mountains) and the Manzanares River in the Pedriza Natural Park are some of the highly recommended places to do so. Of course you can also try the urban "beach" Madrid Río, where the locals go to cool down, play and sunbathe every sunny day!
