BURGOS
Mandatory stopping point on the
Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela, this beautiful city retains important
vestiges of its medieval splendour and also boasts one of the masterpieces of
Spanish Gothic, the cathedral, only cathedral in Spain recognized
individually Heritage of Humanity UNESCO.
The privileged location of the
capital of Burgos offers the visitor interesting routes for touring the
province. In one of them, you could discover medieval churches and monasteries,
feudal castles and Renaissance palaces. You will find these architectural
Burgos´ gems in the towns of Lerma, Covarrubias or Aranda de Duero. The latter
also belongs to the wine route Ribera de Duero, and we will have the
opportunity to visit some of its wineries. If you are interested in history you
definitely cannot miss the opportunity to visit the important prehistoric site
of Atapuerca, a World Heritage Site since 2000.
If there is something in common
with all these places is their strong culinary personality. The Burgos cooking
draws on wealth local products such as vegetables, cured meats, game ... Lamb
in a wood oven, marinated trout, and cod stew, composed the latter. And for
dessert, egg, cheese with honey and walnuts, or almonds (wrapped in caramel).
All this washed down with fine wines from Ribera del Duero designation.
